A sheaf of oats for Sleipnir..

Dec 6. Christmas Traditions in Scandinavia

This is one of my favorite traditions. Hanging a sheaf of oats as high up in a tree as possible for Sleipnir. Odin’s eight-legged horse can run just as fast in the air as on the ground and it’s said that he can run through mountains and on water. No horse runs as fast as Sleipnir and if you want to be on Odin’s good side, feed his horse. Imagine this: you get out of bed in the morning and look out the window. You see a massive, beautiful, muscular, eight-legged horse nibbling at the sheaf you hung in the tree. I’d love to see that. Of course the birds get their share of the sheaf of oats – it’s nice for them since it can be difficult for them to find food if the snow covers too much. This is an easy meal and it’s nice to watch them eat.

Have a great day..
