Monster camping..

This is Marvin. He goes hiding when halloween is near, because he doesn’t want to scare anyone. So if you meet him in the forest, remember; he’s very nice and if you’re kind to him at his camp site, he’ll wave you over and he’ll share his marshmallows with you.

The pattern is free, and uses U.S. teminology.
Marvin is approx. 5 cm/ 2″ tall, ground is approx. 10 cm/ 4″ wide

Yarn: cotton nr 8 or similar:
dark lilac, orange, light brown, white, black, dark brown, green print, yellow, red, gold (optional), light grey.
Crochet hook 2 and 3 mm
Stitch marker
Safety eye 12 mm
Fiber filling, scraps of yarn or rice
Pliers for twisting
Fabric glue
Cardboard circle approx 2 cm/ 1″ in diameter
Glue gun (optional)
Tweezers (optional)

MR = magic ring
st = stitch
ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
L st = loop stitch
sl st = slip stitch
inc = 2 st in the same stitch
dec = crochet 2 st together
10 sc = 1 sc in each of the next 10 st.
5 x 2 dc in next = make 2 dc in the next stitch 5 times
(do this) x times (stitches total in the round)
F/O = fasten off
Work in continous rounds if nothing else is specified

Made from the bottom up with a 3 mm crochet hook.
Colours: lilac, orange, black
ch 2, 6 sc in the 2. st from the hook
Rd 1: inc 6 times (12)
Rd 2: inc 12 times (24)
Rd 3: BLO: (sc 3, inc) 6 times (30)
Rd 4-6: both loops: sc around (30)
Weave in the short end and glue or sew the cardboard circle to the bottom
Rd 7: (sc 3, dec) 6 times (24)
Rd 8: sc around (24)
With black yarn embroider a smile (or wait until he’s finished if you prefer)
Rd 9: (sc 4, dec) 4 times (20)
Insert safety eye after round 8
Rd 10: sc around (20)
Rd 11: (dec, 3 sc) 4 times (16)
Rd 12: sc around (16)
Cut 8 strands of orange yarn approx 10 cm/ 4″ long. Attach 4 on each side as ear tufts in round 11.
Stuff the bottom of the body firmly
Rd 13: (dec, 2 sc) 4 times (12)
Rd 14: sc around (12)
Rd 15: dec 6 times (6)
Stuff the rest firmly
Rd 16: dec 3 times (3)
Close up the hole and F/O

ARMS: make 2 with a 2 mm crochet hook.
Colours: lilac, orange.
Orange yarn: 5 sc in MR
Rd 1-2: sc around (5)
Tighten the short end (make room for wire in one arm)
Change to lilac yarn
Rd 3: sc around (5)
Cut the orange, make a couple of knots on the shorter ends and continue with lilac.
Rd 4-6-: sc around (5)
Sl st. in next, F/O, leave an end to sew.

Sew the arms to the body.
Fray and trim the ear tufts to your liking.

Colours: light brown.
Twist a piece of wire to create the branch, approx 4 cm/ 1½” when twisted. Apply fabric glue to it and twist the yarn it around the wire to make it look like a branch. Leave the peace that goes into the arm free of yarn. Let dry.
Put the branch into one of the monster’s arms. Bend it if you like.

MARSHMALLOW: make 1 with a 2 mm crochet hook.
Coulour: white
6 sc in MR
Rd 1: sc around (6)
sl st, F/O. Weave in the ends.
Glue the marshmallow to the branch

GROUND: made with a 3 mm crochet hook.
Colours: black, dark brown, green print.
Start with black yarn:
Ch 2, 6 sc in 2. st. from the hook (6)
Rd 1: inc 6 times (12)
Rd 2: inc 12 times (24)
Rd 3: add dark brown: sc around: 2 black st., 2 brown st. (24)
Rd 4: cut the black yarn, continue with dark brown: (inc, sc in next st) 12 times (36)
Rd 5: add green yarn: sc around: 2 dark brown st, 1 green st (36)
Rd 6: cut the dark brown yarn, continue with the green: (sc in next st, inc) 18 times (54)
Rd 7: sc around (54)
Rd 8 (arc): sc in next 6, 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 10 sc, 1hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 6 sc, inc, 10 sc, inc, 6 sc (56)
Rd 9 (arc): 6 sc, 1 hdc, (5 x 2 dc in next), 1 hdc. 10 sc, 1 hdc, (5 x 2 dc in next), 1 hdc, 8 sc, inc, 10 sc, inc, 6 sc (68)
Rd 10: sc around (68)
Sl st in next, F/O, weave in the ends

Flames: 2 mm crochet hook as pull-through-tool
Colour: red, orange, yellow, gold (optional)
Cut pieces of yarn, approx. 15 cm /6″ long, 3 pieces in each colour.
Divide the strands in half and attach them to the ground in sets of 3 (1 red, 1 yellow, 1 orange).
Cut the flames to about 3 cm / 1″ (a little shorter in the edge). Fray the strands and brush them to make them look like fire. Add a few gold strands if you like.
Pinch the top, push down and let go to give the flames an “onion-like” appearance.

STONES: (make 8 with a 2 mm crochet hook)
Colour: light grey.
6 sc in MR
Rd 1-2: sc around (6)
sl st, F/O. Weave in the ends.
Glue or sew the stones to ground around the flames to create the pit.

GRASS TUFT: (make 1 with a 2 mm crochet hook)
Colour: green print.
6 sc in MR
Rd 1: 2 loop st in every st (12)
Rd 2: 1 loop st in every st (12)
FO, weave in the end (s) (depending on how you want to attach it)
Cut the loops, fray the strands and trim to your liking.
Hot glue or sew the tuft to the surface.
Add some strands to the surface and fray them, so there’ll be a little random grass too.

Colours: dark brown, light brown.
Twist some pieces of wire, glue and twist yarn around it to turn it in to firewood. Arrange the firewood in a pile next to the fire pit to make it look right. Glue the firewood to the ground so they’ll stay in place.
